Sakinah (سكينة: peace, mercy, together) is Islamic funeral guidance for Muslim families in Singapore, for the hours after a loved one passes, when you may not know what to do first.
The problem
After a death, a family has to make a series of time-sensitive decisions, often within hours, while grieving. The information exists, but it is scattered across mosques, WhatsApp groups, and relatives' memories, and the people who can help are hard to reach at 2am.
Who it's for
A family member who has just lost someone and needs the next correct action, not a menu of features. Often on a phone, sometimes at a graveside with poor signal.
What it does
- Complete funeral guide: tahlil, dua, mandi jenazah, kafan, talqin, solat jenazah, and a 14-task checklist, with Arabic text, transliteration, and English. Works offline.
- Direct line to providers: ustaz, mandi jenazah teams, full-service providers, and mosques, reachable via WhatsApp or phone in one tap.
- Community dua and memorial: an opt-in memorial page, with reminders for malam ke-3, 7, 40, and 100.
- Useful every day: Al-Quran with translation, dua for every occasion, and direct infaq to verified charities.
The decisions that mattered
- Never touch money. Sakinah is a matcher, not a middleman: payments go directly between family and provider. That was an ethical line first, and it also removed a whole category of risk (no card data, nothing pulling the app into payments regulation).
- Hold data lightly. The guide lives on the device, so almost nothing about that moment leaves the phone. Memorial pages are public by nature, so they are opt-in and the family chooses what to share.
- Verification is the feature. At the moment people are most open to being taken advantage of, vetting the providers and charities on the other end matters more than any screen.
The longer story is in Building Sakinah: An App for the Hardest Moment.
What this shows
Discovery before building. The most important product decisions came from understanding the user's situation, and most of them were about what to leave out.
Status
- Web live at sakinah.sg; iOS and Android in TestFlight beta, with the app-store release coming.
- Bilingual (English and Bahasa Melayu), offline-capable, and free.
